Tips for coat care in dogs

Dog with a shiny coat

A beautiful coat on your four-legged friend is not a given, because both short and long coats need regular care. Some dog owners unfortunately still make the mistake of washing the dog's coat with shampoos that are actually intended for humans. This can have a very negative effect on the coat and skin, because shampoos for humans are often far too aggressive. Below you will find some simple tips for coat care in dogs.

Brush the coat regularly

Regular coat care not only has a very positive effect on coat health, it also promotes the social bond between dog and owner. Brushing in particular – once a week for short-haired breeds, perhaps more often for long-haired breeds – is important for the relationship between owner and animal. A soft natural-bristle brush or a dog brush with rubber nubs is recommended. Loose hairs are removed in a targeted way with what is known as a Furminator. Always brush gently against the direction of growth and always remove the hairs with the Furminator in the direction of growth. Brushing massages the skin and promotes circulation – which is why dogs usually find it very pleasant.

Do not bathe dogs too often and only with dog shampoo

Bathing cannot of course be avoided entirely, especially if your four-legged friend has once again rolled with relish in something that people find not particularly fragrant. Nevertheless, you should not bathe short-haired breeds in particular too often, and should as a rule only lather your dog with a special dog shampoo. Bathing too frequently and using the wrong shampoo dry the skin out considerably, which also harms coat health. By the way: the normal function of skin and coat can also be supported through targeted nutrition and, if needed, with a special supplementary food. If, despite regular care, the coat shows thinning patches or other abnormalities, you should check your animal for parasites and, if in doubt, present it to the vet.

The right food is a decisive factor for a healthy coat

Good food has its price – but do you skimp on your own food? Finding a dog food that is well tolerated is not always easy, because every dog reacts differently. As a rule, you should avoid discount food and also prepare something fresh for your dog now and then. Make sure there is an adequate supply of nutrients and variety. In addition, a needs-based supplement can support the normal function of skin and coat as well as vitality.
