Treating skin conditions in dogs

Skin problems in dogs are by no means rare, and a skin irritation is usually extremely distressing for the animal. It is often accompanied by restlessness and increased scratching. The animals' own defences are also challenged by such strains. The attentive dog owner can usually recognise skin abnormalities in their animal by a strong reddening of the affected skin region and by flaking, although these clear signs are not always noticed immediately, especially in animals with long coats.
What causes skin problems in dogs?
Skin problems in dogs can be traced back to the most varied triggers, such as a bacterial or viral burden or a skin fungus. In addition, some dogs also suffer from allergies, which can likewise cause skin reactions. In some cases, special skin parasites also trigger severely distressing skin reactions. If a dog constantly scratches itself, a thorough check of the skin and possibly also a trip to the vet is necessary.
What can the dog owner do to support skin function?
First and foremost, many skin problems in dogs can be supported locally with the help of ointments, creams or lotions designed for this purpose. The animal owner should never use preparations intended for humans for this. Because these products often have a concentration of active ingredients that is far too high for dogs! Furthermore, the dog owner is always well advised to support the normal function of the skin and coat as well as the vitality of their dog nutritionally, in order to promote the body's own defences when under strain.
