Cats – our companions for a long time

Cats – our companions for a long time

10,000 years of shared history and the mystery of human and cat.
Dogs have accompanied us for 30,000 years, yet the relationship with the cat is unique in its own way. Around 10,000 years ago, with the beginning of agriculture, our paths crossed. It was a partnership of convenience on an equal footing. The stored grain attracted mice, and the cats followed their prey into the vicinity of humans. Our ancestors recognised the invaluable worth of the silent hunters and deliberately lured them. A partnership was born that to this day captivates through a fascinating mixture of closeness and independence.

Gods, witches and loyal companions

The history of the cat is marked by extremes. In the advanced Egyptian civilisation they were revered as divine beings, mummified and buried with the highest honours. In the Middle Ages, on the other hand, they were often maligned as demonic companions. Despite this eventful history, cats have preserved their wild core.

The science of bonding: That cats build a deeper bond with us than their often aloof nature might suggest is proven by modern studies. In experiments, 65 percent of cats showed clear symptoms of stress as soon as their human left the room, and only relaxed when they returned. This secure attachment is the proof. To our velvet-pawed friends we are far more than just the can openers; we are their source of protection and security.

Reading the language of the velvet paws correctly

Cats communicate more subtly than dogs. Anyone who wants to cultivate a close relationship must learn to read and respect the fine signals correctly.

  • Affection: An upright, slightly quivering little tail and the busy brushing around the legs are clear declarations of love.
  • Well-being: Purring and kneading trigger the bonding hormone oxytocin in both human and animal, a biological balm for the soul.
  • Warning signs: Flattened ears, a lashing tail or hissing clearly signal: this far and no further.

A species-appropriate home for more quality of life

To deepen the bond, animal psychology advises active occupation. But mental stimulation involves more than just cuddling. A species-appropriate territory should offer important elements.

  • Encourage the hunting instinct: Fishing-rod toys, plush mice or puzzle toys keep the mind alert and reduce stress.
  • Vertical levels: Cats love to survey their territory from above. A free spot on the windowsill or high resting surfaces on the scratching post are essential.
  • Safe retreats: Whether a cat tent, a basket or the classic cardboard box – cats need places where they can feel completely safe.

From wild tomcat to proud house tiger

Today, in Germany alone, around 12 million cats live, making them the most popular pet of all. Whether a proud Maine Coon, a graceful British Shorthair or the robust domestic cat: the genetic make-up of our present-day flatmates differs by only a few genes from that of their wild ancestors.

It is this wild heart that fascinates us so. Cats captivate through their mysterious beauty and their proud wilfulness. To keep them means to have a loyal companion that loves its independence but seeks our warmth.

DOG FIT tip

A strong bond grows through respect. Pay attention to where your cat likes to be touched, usually on the neck and cheeks, and give it the freedom to decide for itself when the cuddle time ends.
