Insect stings in dogs

Insect stings are often very painful for dogs and are usually noticed when the animal suddenly yelps or frantically licks the spot. Stings in the mouth cavity or in the throat area are particularly critical. Swelling of the tongue and throat can cause breathing difficulties, which is why immediate action is required here.

• Look for the affected spot on the dog's body
• Cool the swelling with a damp cloth or ice cubes
• Apply cold compresses for stings in the throat area
• Consult a vet immediately

What to do with a bone fracture?

Open fractures, in which the bone is visible, always constitute an emergency. Here there is a risk of infection or inflammation of the bones. Carefully cover the wound with a clean cloth or a fresh item of clothing to protect it from dirt. Do not clean the wound yourself, but take the dog to a practice as quickly as possible.

Treating ear bleeding correctly

Heavy bleeding from the ear often does not stop on its own, because the wound keeps opening up again due to the typical head shaking. This can lead to considerable blood loss. A special ear bandage helps to control the bleeding until the vet can clean the wound properly.

• Carefully fold both ears together over the head
• Pad the area between and above the ears well
• Apply a head bandage that securely fixes both ears
• Make sure to wrap the bandage elastically but not too tightly

Recognising internal bleeding

After accidents or falls, internal bleeding, which is life-threatening, must always be reckoned with. Watch for signs such as pale oral mucosa, a rapid pulse, weakness or a swelling of the abdominal cavity. In such a case, an animal clinic that has facilities for stabilisation and diagnosis must be consulted without delay.
