Dogs Make You Happy

A woman in relaxed interaction with a therapy dog That dogs can at least make us happier is something we have all known for a long time. But who would have thought that even a single encounter with a dog has a clear effect on our psyche? A research group at the University of British Columbia came to this conclusion. It studied the effects of dogs on students.

Studying the canine effects on students

For this, one has to know that more and more universities are taking their duty of care towards students seriously. It is known how much pressure they are under to pass the important exams so that their degree is not put at risk. It is no wonder that students frequently complain of great emotional strain. While there are psychological support services, institutions in the United States of America are increasingly relying on therapy dogs. At Miami University, for example, there is even a special therapy dog programme. In the presence of a trainer, the students can talk and play with the dogs. This has had an extremely positive response. Contact with the animals brings the feeling of being accepted, loved and cheered up, through the affection and warmth of the dogs.

Research findings and study results

The researchers at the University of British Columbia became curious and surveyed the participants of the sessions. There were 246 students, who were surveyed before the session, immediately afterwards and again 10 hours later. The results are remarkable, according to the study leader. Even 10 hours later, the participants reported that they had somewhat fewer negative feelings than usual. They felt better supported and less stressed than those people who had not taken part in the session.

  • Clear reduction of stress and negative emotions
  • Lasting effect for up to 10 hours after the contact
  • Increased feeling of energy, courage and joy of life
  • Effective after just a single therapy dog session

The result shows that a single encounter with a therapy dog is actually enough to make people happier and more relaxed. Immediately after the session, opinions were unanimous that people felt noticeably less stressed. More energy, courage and a general feeling of happiness were also the result. As mentioned, this positive effect still persisted 10 hours later.

This article serves as general information and to illustrate how valuable contact with dogs is for our emotional health.
