The Dark Season for Dog and Human
Now it is back again, the dark season. That means that the evening walk with the dog and its human often takes place in the dark. Unfortunately, an above-average number of accidents happen during this time. Human and dog are often hard for other road users to make out. It is therefore important to be attentive and to ensure sufficient visibility.
Protection in the dark for dog and human
Our dogs see very well even at dusk and in the dark. They romp about just as during the day, without knowing that people can see only to a limited extent in these moments. So it can happen that the dog is lost from sight in the dark. Other people, or drivers, may also fail to see the dog in time. This can lead to the dog suddenly disappearing or, in the worst case, being run over.
- Use of reflectors on the lead, collar and harness
- Wearing safety vests in bright neon colours
- Active lighting through modern light-emitting diodes
- Visibility of the lead to identify the human-dog pairing
Keeping the dog on a short lead can serve as one possible emergency solution. A torch, too, can be helpful. Considerably better, however, are reflectors on the lead, the collar or the harness, as well as on your own clothing. This should definitely be observed. There are of course many other helpful items for safety in winter.
Neon colours for the dark season
What is really important is that you yourself can see where you are going, and that others notice you in time. Reflective safety vests, which are available for both people and dogs, provide very good protection. They consist of bright neon colours and are additionally fitted with reflectors. That way you stand out even from a distance. It is also important that the lead is clearly visible. This way other people can recognise that dog and human are connected to one another. Reflective leads and collars, too, are therefore absolutely recommended in the dark.
Lighting through light-emitting diodes for better orientation
There is also active lighting that shines by itself in the dark. That is actually a good idea, as people and dogs really are easier to see with lighting through light-emitting diodes. However, you should bear in mind that no one likes to have a permanently flashing light like in a discotheque within their field of vision. A nice side effect here is that these light-emitting diodes are available in various colours. So, if you are out and about with several dogs, you can assign each animal its own colour.
