Mumijo (Shilajit) for dogs
Shilajit, also known as mumijo, is a resin-like substance from rock crevices in the Himalayas. It forms over very long periods from compacted plant material. Characteristic is its content of fulvic acid.
Shilajit » resin from the mountains
Shilajit is neither plant nor mineral, but something in between. At high altitudes organic material accumulates in rock crevices over centuries, is compacted by pressure and temperature and emerges in the warm season as a dark, viscous mass from the rock.
It is traditionally collected by hand at altitude in the Himalayas, and also in the Altai and the Caucasus. The name comes from Sanskrit and means roughly conqueror of the rock.
What shilajit contains
The main constituents are humic substances, above all fulvic acid, which serves as the marker substance and by which quality is measured. Added to this are trace elements from the surrounding rock and plant degradation products.
Why purification is indispensable with shilajit
Raw shilajit always contains rock particles as well and, depending on the site, unwanted admixtures. In its original form it is therefore not a finished raw material.
Before further processing it is dissolved in water, filtered and thickened again. Only this step separates the soluble constituents from the rock. Because shilajit originates from rock and carries trace elements from it, testing for heavy metals is particularly important here.
