Bronchitis in dogs must be treated
Dogs can develop bronchitis through various circumstances, and in general the dog owner should have this illness in their four-legged friend treated by the vet. If bronchitis is not treated, it can turn into a chronic condition and also into a very serious situation for the dog! How does bronchitis develop in dogs and what can be done to support recovery?
Bronchitis in dogs is usually triggered by pathogens
Fundamentally, bronchitis is often an infection that is encouraged by various circumstances. Cold, wet weather, a strained immune system in the dog, dry air from heating, becoming chilled, irritant substances that are inhaled - all of these pose clear risks of the dog developing bronchitis more easily. Even parasites that settle in the lungs, such as lungworms for example, not infrequently cause bronchitis in dogs.
How does bronchitis show itself in the four-legged friend?
Bronchitis shows itself through clear symptoms, such as coughing, retching and vomiting, expulsion of mucus, tiredness in the dog, fever and also shortness of breath. Sometimes bronchitis is also associated with a refusal to eat, which generally indicates that the dog is not feeling well. If these or similar symptoms occur in the dog, the vet must be consulted immediately. If bronchitis is not treated, in the worst case irreparable damage to the bronchi and to the dog's lungs can result!
How is bronchitis in dogs treated?
Veterinary medicine has various effective medicines up its sleeve against bronchitis in dogs. On the one hand, vets frequently administer one medicine each to suppress the urge to cough, to loosen the mucus and, if needed, an antibiotic against the pathogens. The dog owner can support recovery alongside this, for example by ensuring sufficient air humidity or by treating the dog with inhalations (e.g. with a saline solution) after consulting the vet.
